Frequently Asked Questions

The Irish Driver Theory Test is the first step to getting your driver’s license in Ireland. This computer-based exam tests your knowledge of motoring theory for the specific vehicle category you want to drive. It covers the rules of the road and risk perception. Passing the theory test is mandatory before you can begin driving lessons.

You can apply and pay for your driver theory test online, which is the fastest way to book. The application form (PDF) is also available from the testing service and NDLS centers. Alternatively, you can book a test by phone or mail. Once your application is received, you will be notified in advance of the test date, location, and time. You can reschedule or cancel a theory test online, or by contacting the call center. However, if you do not arrive on time for your test appointment or cancel less than 5 business days (including 3 full business days) before your test date, you will forfeit your test fee.

You are asked to arrive 30 minutes before your test to allow time for the check-in process.

Firstly, the Test Centre staff will verify that you have the required identification.

  • Please note that if you do not bring the required identification or arrive late for your appointment, you will not be allowed to test, and you will lose your test fee.

After verification, you will be signed in, and a Test Centre Administrator (TCA) will explain the procedures and how the test works. They will then escort you to the workstation where you will take your test.

The test duration is 45 minutes and consists of 40 questions. You need to answer at least 35 questions correctly to pass.

After passing the theory test, you will need to apply for a learner permit. Following this, you must complete at least 12 essential driving training lessons. Yes, our practice tests are designed to closely mimic the format and content of the actual driving theory test, using questions that cover the same topics.

Regular practice using our tests, studying the official driver’s handbook, and reviewing traffic laws and road signs are the best ways to prepare.
